Master Florist is an international organisation associating florists all over the world. It’s a huge project the people at Master Florist are working on, requiring a tremendous amount of effort, but, according to the founders Mark Doyle and Jan Huisman, it’s completely worth it.

Master Florist brings local florists together through communities, inspiration, profiling, and marketing, so shoppers can connect with the best and most talented florists. Furthermore, they have close relations with breeders, growers, traders, and the whole floral industry in order to promote great connections, exposure, new products, and innovation.

Mark Doyle (together with Jan Huisman one of the founders) is a person with experience in managing and running a business, primarily in the IT industry. His interest in starting Master Florist was a combination of trying to think in solutions and an enormous wish to think in local terms.

Mark:

“I saw several issues when working for Fleurop-Interflora, and had a wish to strengthen local businesses. I really appreciate the skills, convenience of local businesses such as florists, and their ability to contribute to the local community practically and economically. However, as the business world consolidates, and is more online, it’s becoming very challenging to operate locally and independently. We think that by by bringing florists together in modern ways, it will be empowering and bring wide-ranging benefits to the floral industry in general.”

Mark and Jan are both committed to be successful in the online florist business internationally.

Mark:

“It helps to have confidence that what you’re doing has meaning and purpose for yourself and others. After that, it needs some luck and/or persistence.”

Through websites, social media groups, and Facebook pages, Master Florist connects 50’000+ florists locally and internationally. Every day there are thousands of interactions between florists in these communities. Each day hundreds of inspiring designs and discussions are shared.

Get Together, Grow Together

One of the core beliefs of Master Florist is that bringing together florists (and all in the floral industry), creates opportunities for all to grow. Education and exchange between florists certainly is one aspect, but as the ‘Master Florist movement’ grows, and more people support it, it also creates more opportunities for florists economically.

Purpose and Idea

From the start, and the core idea behinds Master Florist, is the idea of creating a ‘movement’ for florists. Everything has the goal to advance floristry and florists. In a way, Master Florist might be most closely compared to floral associations, however, as being independent, Master Florist can also pursue commercial cases that make sense for florists and floristry in general.

Mark and Jan are very thankful for the support they receive from the industry: florists are free to join and take advantage of the communities and services they provide. Master Florist also helps with profiling and increasing florist’s reach, so there’s a very positive reaction to that from floral designers.

Jan Huisman:

“We feel it’s best to be inclusive and provide an environment that fosters good design and skills. There are so many awesome designers in our network, and I see brilliant designs coming by so often.
Master Florist’s reach in social media is really impressive. Just look at the number of followers. It certainly took a lot of work to reach such a large audience.”

At Master Florist they’ve also noticed recent developments in floristry around Covid-19; More and more people expect to buy online. Covid has highlighted this trend that many consumers now expect to conduct business online, it’s just a part of running a florist business these days.

Mark Doyle:

“We firmly believe selling online is necessary for most florists and we see those that have something unique, special, or just do all the right things consistently have a lot of success.”

When Master Florist looks at the floral industry and its growth, success, and possibilities, this is their opinion:

“In certain parts of the world like Eastern Europe and Asia, floristry has developed well and there’s still immense potential in most of those markets. However if just considering raw early-stage potential, Africa and South America seem somewhat underrepresented in terms of floral designers.”

Upcoming Plans

Related to the development of the Master Florist platform, they for sure have upcoming plans. They are actively growing communities, members, and industry partnerships.

Jan Huisman:

“Master Florist still has so many great ideas, it’s just hard to find the time for them. We’ll definitely be improving the services we offer to florists on the platform in the future as a strong florist community will have an overall positive effect.”

Master Florist Grows

Since the existence of Master Florist, there has been a lot of positive developments. Eastern Europe and Asia have really made great steps forward in terms of skills and design, and they are following many amazing designers from those markets. There are certainly still challenges for running a floral business however designers are continuously finding new ideas and business models.

Mark Doyle:

“I’m also glad to see more florists are adding value to their work through design skills and creativity. It remains to be seen how the current pandemic will affect the industry, however, after some initial problems and complications it appears the industry is coping better than others.”

“Master Florist hopes to reach its goals for the future and would like to thank everybody that’s supporting them in any way.”
